Brief

Rates of head and neck cancer in the North West are 20% higher than the rest of England as a whole, with over twice as many men living with the disease than women.

Challenge

North West Cancer Research wanted to break this pattern. We were asked to create a campaign that would raise awareness of the symptoms of head and neck cancer and encourage men to ‘speak out’ to their GP to increase early diagnoses. This would ultimately help reduce the prevalence of head and neck cancer in the region.

We enlisted the support of BBC radio presenter Mark Radcliffe, who had previously been diagnosed with head and neck cancer, to give men the confidence to seek advice if they experienced symptoms.

Our campaign, Don’t Be Silent. Speak Out, featured Mark and the faces of five other survivors to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and how to spot the signs of head and neck cancer.

We rolled out our campaign video across PR and digital channels, focusing on the real-life stories of our case studies and their message to other people. We also engaged with local integrated care boards to ensure that medical professionals were aware of our campaign and its aim to increase awareness.
